California Dam Lets Water Shared by Farms Flow to Salmon

Associated Press: With water scarce in Northern Californias Klamath Basin, a federal agency is again releasing water into the Klamath River to prevent a repeat of the 2002 fish kill that left tens of thousands of adult salmon dead. That move could lead to a renewed fight about the Klamath River, which has long been subject to intense political battles over the sharing of scarce water between farms and fish. As California goes, so goes country: Welcome to our hotter future

TomDispatch: Long ago, I lived in a cheap flat in San Francisco and worked as the lone straight man in a gay construction company. Strangely enough, the drought now strangling California brings back memories of those days. It was the 1970s. Our company specialized in restoring the Victorian gingerbread to the facades of the citys townhouses, and I got pretty good at installing cornices, gable brackets, and window hoods, working high above the street. What I remember most, though, is the way my co-workers...

Corcoran, home of the California State Prison (and Charles Manson), sank 13 inches in just eight months. The cause, according to officials, is the rapid pumping of groundwater in response to the drought plaguing the state. From the Associated Press: "We are pumping at historic levels," said Mark Cowin, head of...

Global Warming Has Worsened California Drought By Roughly 25 Percent, Study Says
2015-08-20 19:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Yale Environment 360: Rising temperatures driven by climate change have measurably worsened the California drought by increasing evaporation rates and exacerbating the state's lack of rainfall by up to 27 percent, according to a study from Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. While natural weather variations are largely thought to have caused the state's precipitation deficit, rising temperatures appear to be intensifying the situation by driving moisture from plants and soil into the air. The new study...
