Google pushes Chrome app store with more money-making options for devs

Google yesterday said it would let developers of Chrome packaged apps issue free trials and offer in-app purchases, and allow creators of browser extensions to charge for their wares for the first time. The moves were described by Google as additional ways for developers to monetize their work building apps and add-ons for Chrome (the browser) and Chrome OS, the lightweight operating system that powers cheap Chromebook notebooks.

Flappy Bird. Over the last few weeks, this almost insultingly simple Helicopter clone with Mario-like graphics has experienced one of the craziest roller coaster rides in the history of gaming. When the game peaked at the start of February, it was being downloaded millions of times per day, and accruing the developer, Dong Nguyen, hundreds of thousands of dollars in advertising revenue. Yesterday, though, saying it had ruined his life, Nguyen removed Flappy Bird from the iOS and Android app stores. Does that make it OK to pirate the game, or not?

I was pleased last year when Apple finally took a proactive stance and reached out to 28 million App Store customers who might have been bamboozled by shady in-app purchases in games designed to take advantage of children. However, even that action had dubious beginnings stemming from a class action lawsuit that Apple settled this summer. Most recently, Apple settled a similar issue with the FTC.
