Nashua sells subscriber bases to MTN, Vodacom

2014-04-14 10:01:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) South Africa's Nashua Mobile has inked separate agreements with MTN and Vodacom to dispose off its subscriber bases. Nashua's parent company Reunert said it was unlikely that the business would generate acceptable returns, so it is selling the subscriber bases to the two operators for a combined gross sum of ZAR 2.26 billion. For the past several years Nashua Mobile has been trading in a saturated, highly competitive market. It has experienced declining ARPU due to lower network tariffs and lower out of bundle spend by customers. The decline in the least cost routing business and competitive pricing in the market have further reduced revenue. Nashua Mobile said its also pursuing the sale of its Cell C customer base to a third party. The culmination of these transactions will result in the closure of Nashua Mobile and its operations. The acquiring parties will maintain the current contractual arrangements with customers on the same terms. Closing of the transaction is subject to the approval of the Competition Authorities, until which Nashua Mobile's operations and customer services will continue uninterrupted.

Telkom confirms talks with MTN over network deal

2014-03-07 08:46:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) South Africa operator Telkom has confirmed that it is in talks with MTN over a possible agreement to outsource the operation of the Telkom radio access network (RAN) to MTN. Telkom added that a deal would also include a potential expansion of the existing roaming relationship between the parties to include bilateral roaming. MTN also confirmed the talks. The statements follow rumours for several months that the two companies were discussing a network-sharing agreement. This would give MTN access to Telkom Mobile's 2,300 MHz LTE network, while helping Telkom reduce losses from its mobile service. Both would also benefit from enhanced backhaul capacity.

MTN Group FY revenue up 12% to ZAR 136.5 bln on weak rand

2014-03-05 09:50:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) MTN Group posted a 12 percent increase in its revenue for 2013 to ZAR 136 billion compared with 2012, boosted by a weakening of the rand against a number of currencies. For the year as a whole, the rand declined by 18.3 percent on average against the US dollar. On a constant currency basis, revenue increased by 3.1 percent. This was largely the result of a 6.1 percent decline in revenue at MTN South Africa and 5.7 percent growth in MTN Nigeria.
