Patients with type 1 diabetes have significantly lower blood levels of four proteins that help protect their tissue from attack by their immune system, scientists report. Conversely, their first-degree relatives, who share some of the high-risk genes but do not have the disease, have high levels of these proteins circulating in their blood, said Dr. Jin-Xiong She, director of the Center for Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University.

Heavy rains in May and a slumping oil industry put a damper on the second-quarter results of H&E Equipment Services Inc., a Baton Rouge-based construction-equipment supplier. H&E's profit dipped to $11.5 million, or 33 cents per share, compared to $15.7 million, or 45 cents per share, a year ago.

Bunge quarterly profit misses forecasts on lower agribusiness results

Bunge Ltd, one of the world's largest agricultural commodities traders, reported a lower quarterly profit on weak year-on-year returns in its agribusiness segment and poor food and ingredients margins. The White Plains, New York-based company reported a net second-quarter profit of $72 million, or 50 cents share, compared with $272 million, or $1.81 a share, a year earlier.

Facebook revenues up 39% on mobile expansion, profits lower

(Telecompaper) Facebook reported second-quarter revenues up 39 percent year-on-year to USD 4.04 billion, while profits fell due to a sharp rise in costs and provisions for taxes. Operating profit dropped 8 percent to USD 1.27 billion, after an 82 percent increase in operating costs, and net profit was down 9 percent to USD 719 million, including a provision of USD 554 million for taxes. Adjusted EPS was still up 16 percent to USD 0.50. Revenues continued to benefit from the company's expanding mobile customer base, with mobile now making up 76 percent of advertising revenue 62 percent a year ago. Monthly active users on mobile reached 1.31 billion in the quarter, up 23 percent year-on-year, compared to total monthly users of the social network of 1.49 billion, up 13 percent. On a daily basis, 968 million used the social network, including 844 million over mobile, up 24 percent from a year ago. Facebook finished the quarter with USD 14.1 billion in cash, after free cash flow of USD 1.33 billion.

Yelp shares slide on lower forecast, analysts' downgrades

Yelp shares plunged the most since the company's initial public offering three years ago, losing one-quarter of its value, a day after the customer-review website cut its revenue forecast, said it will stop selling national brand advertising and announced Max Levchin's departure as chairman. Shares of the San Francisco-based company fell 25 percent to $25.06 at the close in New York, the biggest single-day decline ever.
