Topping the list for total compensation in 2016 was David Steiner, who retired as president and CEO of the industry's largest company, Waste Management. David Steiner received total compensation of $17,222,664 in 2016, up from $11,573,375 in 2015 and $10,770,900 in 2014. Steiner took home $1,091,772 in salary, $8,513,964 in stock awards, $1,425,158 in option awards, $2,133,895 in non-equity incentive plan compensation and $4,057,875 in all other compensation. He served as CEO and president from 2004 through late 2016. Previously he was Waste Management's chief financial officer. Steiner joined the company in November 2000 as vice president and deputy general counsel, and was appointed senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary in July 2001. In April 2003, he was elected CFO.
