An increasingly sophisticated network of railroads across the U.S. hauls more grain, oil, coal, autos, auto parts and other manufactured goods than ever before as part of a $73 billion industry that employs more than 180,000 people, according to the Association of American Railroads, or AAR, an industry trade group. The deregulation of the railroad industry in 1980 with the Staggers Act produced mergers and takeovers of unprofitable and bankrupt lines, and routes have consolidated rail transport in the hands of just seven major U.S. carriers - the biggest being Union Pacific Deregulation has generally made rail transport more economical than trucking.
