This is a narrative of two major industries in the countryside: coconut and sugar. Some 3.5 million hectares are planted to coconut, and about 430,000 hectares to sugarcane. By constituency, the coconut organizations claim about three million farmers, farm workers, and harvesters are directly dependent on coconut. The sugar industry claims about 600,000 direct beneficiaries.
