RAL Space AIV Deputy Group Leader IRC212277 Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Didcot 47,361 to 48,904 plus excellent benefits Full Time, Open Ended About Us The Science and Technology Facilities Council is one of Europes largest multidisciplinary scientific research organisations and our goal is to deliver world class research, innovation and skills for the benefit of the United Kingdom and its people. The RAL Space Department at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory develops space instruments and groundbased astronomy instruments for agencies including ESA, NASA and ESO. In the last two years there has been significant investment in a new building, known as R100, for the engineering divisions of RAL Space which inclides the Assembly, Integration and Verification AIV Group. The AIV Group is responsible for the operation and development of a range of test facilities for the design, manufacture and qualification of space hardware for both the work of RAL Space and the wider space community throughout both the UK and Europe. About the role The AIV Group supports the hands on activities of the department and provides the cleanrooms and test facilities for the department and others to use. As there has been a significant increase of team members within the Group alongside the development of the R100 building and associated facilities there is a requirement for a Deputy Group Leader to work alongside the existing Group Leader. The new team member will initially be managing the installation of several world class test facilities for spacebourne instrumentation as well as learning about the operational aspects of the Group. At times the successful candidate may be required to be directly involved in supporting the construction of facilities or diagnosis of facilitiy performance issues as well as managing and guiding junior staff. The range of tasks that may be required include Management of AIV staff Providing advice to both designers and section staff in the best techniques to be used to meet project requirements Proposal writing and subsequent project management Maintaining the groups current ISO90001 and future EN9100 procedures Regular contact with external customers throughout Europe About you You will Hold a degree, or equivalent, in Engineering or related subject or be time served in a related role with significant experience in a similar environment. Have experience in leading and managing a team of people Have good problem solving skills.
