The big four banks and Macquarie will have to carry more capital against mortgages after the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority said on Monday the average "risk weighting" for home loans needs to rise from around 16 per cent to "at least 25 per cent". APRA's move, which the market has been expecting and will be welcomed by the regional banks, will require the big banks to fund their lending with billions of extra dollars of equity capital.
