ATC explores merger, acquisition options in India

2014-10-03 12:30:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) American Tower Corporation (ATC) is studying merger and acquisition possibilities to boost its presence in India. ATC plans to benefit from India's need for more telecom towers, as the country's data consumption jumps and 4G is adopted nationwide, the Economic Times reports. Telecom operators such as Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular are focusing on upgrading their existing sites to support increasing data demand rather than investing in the deployment of additional sites across the country, Amit Sharma, ATC's president of Asia operations told the Economic Times. ATC is reportedly in talks to acquire a significant stake in its larger rival, local tower operator Viom Networks, to grow its presence in India. Sharma declined to comment on this development, but said that ATC is open to mergers and acquisitions.
