About us SCISYS Deutschland GmbH provides professional engineering and consultancy services supporting space programmes and missions. We have a strong presence at ESOC and EUMETSAT, as well as serving all ESA sites, ESO, Columbus Control Centre, the German Galileo Control Centre and spacecraft primes. Our team is composed of university graduates and experienced professionals, comprising some of the most knowledgeable, dedicated and talented engineers across Europe. Our services cover the whole life cycle of space programmes from early concepts to operations. Our Space Division provides a dynamic, supportive and friendly atmosphere in which you are encouraged to lead with initiative. We support new ideas from our colleagues and are focused on innovation. Moreover, we actively manage your professional development, training and career progression. For the location in Darmstadt, Germany we are looking for an Aerosol Implementation Engineer fm at EUMETSAT. Tasks An algorithm for aerosol optical properties retrievals based on measurements from instruments like IASI, GOME2 and AVHRR on Metop, is currently being developed at EUMETSAT Central Facility. The algorithm is in its early stage of implementation in the EUMETSAT operational ground segment. Further updates to the overall scope of the retrieval, which is currently limited to ocean surfaces and to a reduced number of aerosol types, are in the planning stage. The algorithm is currently based on AVHRR and GOME2 data with the support of operational forecast fields and is planned to include aerosol information content from IASI in forthcoming update cycles. The MultiSensor Aerosol Product Implementation Engineer will work in the Technical and Scientific Support TSS department as a member of the Remote Sensing and Products RSP division. The Consultant will provide support as member of the Atmospheric Composition Section. Hisher responsibilities will cover the implementation, maintenance, update and quality control of the existing operational multisensor aerosol optical properties retrieval algorithm based on data from various instruments on the EUMETSAT Polar System satellites series Metop. The main focus of the retrievals is the exploitation of GOME2 UVVIS radiances and polarisation sensitive data together with IASI infrared radiances as well as AVHRR imaging data. The tasks of the Consultant will include update, maintenance and verification of an operational processor for multisensor satellite retrievals of aerosol optical properties from Metop data based on preexisting prototype versions and or processor specifications integrating the operational processor into the operational product processing chain of the EPS ground segment developing operational continuous functional, performance and quality monitoring processes to be implemented in the EPS operational monitoring system deriving relevant data from internal and external sources to support product quality monitoring in the EPS operational monitoring system performing offline analysis of processor performance and product quality supporting the validation of aerosol products from EPS and the compilation of the relevant product validation reports contributing to the update of the product specification and algorithm specification for multisensor satellite retrievals of aerosol optical properties from Metop reporting anomalies in aerosol product services, contribute to their diagnosis and track their resolution Essential requirements In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, the Consultant shall have a minimum of 3 years experience of the development and implementation of software for operational processing of satellite or meteorological data. The Consultant shall have a minimum of 3 years work experience in UNIX application development and testing in C and C. Specifically, the Consultant shall have experience in Quality control of satellite data and products Operational product processing environments Software build environments and tools e.g. make, imake, eclipse, insure Source code control system, e.g. Subversion or CVS Experience and skills in working in projects and environments characterised by a diversity of stakeholders The Consultant shall be able to conduct all activities in an orderly and structured manner, to work calmly and correctly under stress and must be able to work with the minimum of supervision. Desirable skills In addition to the above requirements, expertise in the following areas shall be considered a distinct advantage Inverse modelling of atmospheric composition using vector radiative transfer models Aerosol optical properties retrieval from satellite data Calibration and validation of satellite products Knowledge of the EPS missions and instruments Java programming Experience with Scripting languages e.g. Python, Perl, TclTk, shell Production monitoring and reporting Experience in scientific processing in general and the Fortran programming language Other information Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is required Travel within Europe may be required Must be an EU national or possess a valid German Work Residence Permit Foreseen start date is 01 May 2013 To guarantee that your application is processed, please apply via our website httpwww.scisys.dewhereweworkspacecareersspacejobs.html
