(Telecompaper) Amazon is in preliminary discussions with major media companies, including CBS and NBCUniversal, about carrying their channels in a future live OTT service, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. Some of the talks began several months ago, one of the people said. The company already offers streaming VoD through Amazon Prime Video and Fire TV, but its recent agreement to acquire Elemental Technologies gives it a platform to deliver live TV over the internet, wrote Frost & Sullivan analyst Dan Rayburn in a blog post. He thinks the company may simply be looking at the economics of the business and talking to content owners about costs. Amazon has been looking at the possibility of offering live TV as early as January 2014, when the Wall Street Journal reported that it had approached media companies. Amazon would not comment on the matter.
