Application Reference TEMSCSCD2013176 Type Contract Position Applied Physicist or Engineer Location Geneva, Switzerland Industry Science and Research Salary Swiss Franc 7980 Swiss Franc 9100 per month Description Are you willing to work in a multiproject environment, in a team of highly skilled physicists, engineers and technicians? Join CERNs Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostats Group and leave your mark in the development of the superconducting magnets that will make the future of the LHC. CERN. Take part! Applied Physicist or Engineer Functions As a scientist in the SCD section, you will Perform electrical measurements, analyse test results of seriesproduction Nb3Sn strands and contribute to the understanding and optimization of performance limits of different types of superconducting materials, as a function of manufacturing process parameters e.g. cabling, heat treatment, strain and stress. Define QA methods and procedures. Followup and identify critical issues that may arise during the series production of the strands. Play a key role in the characterization of RD Nb3Sn strands. Develop physical models and tools for the understanding of the measured performance. Develop tooling and sample holders, participate in the modification, design and construction of the test stations for the measurement of superconducting strands in the superconducting laboratories. Contribute to other activities performed within the section, which include development and characterization of High Temperature Superconductors MgB2, BSCCO and YBCO. Qualification required Masters Degree in the field of Applied Physics or Electrical Engineering or equivalent. A PhD will be an asset. Experience and competencies The experience required for this post is Demonstrated experience in the field of applied superconductivity, with direct experience on measurement and analysis of properties of superconductors. Experience in the field of cryogenics for applications in superconducting magnets and other superconducting devices. The technical competencies required for this post are Knowledge of superconducting materials and High Temperature Superconductivity. Design, processing and operation of stations for power tests measurement techniques and laboratory activity precision measurement electronics data acquisition. Knowledge, manufacturing, followup and QA of production of SC strands and SC cables. Data reduction and modelling techniques for applied physics, with special accent on electromagnetic and thermal phenomena. Founded in 1954 in Geneva, CERN the European Organization for Nuclear Research is the worlds most advanced fundamental research institute for particle physics. Over the last 50 years, it has become a prime example of international collaboration with currently 20 member states. Please note that we only accept applications from CERN Member State nationals.
