This position, based near Frankfurt in Germany, calls for at least three years experience of atmospheric remote sensing . Our client is responsible for establishing and operating weather forecasting and Earth observation satellite programmes with associated data telemetry and dissemination operations. Vast quantities of data are produced and user communities throughout the world are able to access both current and historical data sets. The demanding realtime environment places much emphasis on adherence to quality and configuration management standards and procedures. The main working language is English. The role is focussed on scientific activities in preparation for a future 3MI mission and will embrace Development of algorithms for calibration of 3MI level 0 data with a particular focus on vicarious calibration techniques Development of prototype software code for the purposes of testing and validation Development of an instrument performance model based on specifications to be provided by industry Generation of test data required for the verification of the algorithm and products Associated documentation including test data descriptions, product generation specifications, technical reports etc Collaboration with expert groups and the wider scientific community Provision of support to algorithm, and potentially prototype software, development activities for future level 2 product development for a 3MI instrument The key experience and attributes sought are Experience in atmospheric remote sensing in the optical spectrum Ultraviolet to Infrared Experience in radiative transfer Familiarity with instrument calibration and characterisation Familiarity with Earth observation systems in operational meteorology, atmospheric composition and climate monitoring both remote sensing and in situ systems Handling and processing of remote sensing data Very good skills in a high level programming language e.g. Fortran, C Knowledge of some of the following would be advantageous Quality control of satellite data and products Operational product processing environments Software build environments and tools e.g. make, imake, eclipse, insure Source code control systems e.g. Subversion or CVS Candidates should possess a University degree in meteorology, atmospheric physics, remote sensing,or equivalent. Fluency in English is essential. This is afreelance contract assignment with an initial period of two years starting in May 2013 with two options to extend for further periods of one year each.
