As the number of U.S. brewers climbs above 4,000, and they start competing for resources, distribution, and shelf and tap space, private equity and beer have become more intimately acquainted. Ulysses Management, which shares an address with NBC at Rockefeller Plaza in New York, got into the beer business in 2014 when it bought an undisclosed stake in Lakewood, N.Y.-based Southern Tier Brewing Co.
