Southwest Airlines has seen its profits soar like the broader airline industry as improving demand and lower fuel prices contribute to the bottom line. Capital returns to shareholders used to be rare in the airline industry but a turnaround in industry fortunes has allowed many major carriers to implement capital return plans.
