EUMETSAT is Europes meteorological satellite agency monitoring the weather and climate from space 24 hours a day, 365 days a year We are currently looking for a Competence Area Manager with a focus on Instrument Navigation, Registration and Calibration to join our international team of dynamic and inspiring engineers and industry professionals based in Darmstadt, Germany, tasked with driving innovation within the Space, Satellite and Earth Observation sector. This role is rooted in the mission of EUMETSAT and will provide the opportunity to work with leading IT, Space and Earth Observation organisations and domain experts to make a positive impact on society! BACKGROUND Image Navigation, Registration and Calibration INRC is a critical function for achieving targeted performances in the processing of Earth observation satellite data. This builds on in depth scientific understanding of specific design features of spacecraft and instruments e.g. pointing, geometric, radiometric and multispectral performances and of the use of external elements e.g. selected natural observation targets to improve over intrinsic performances of instruments and achieve Level 1 products of suitable geometric and radiometric quality. The Competence Area Manager Image Navigation, Registration and Calibration CAM INRC manages the team of scientists responsible for the scientific calibration, validation and quality monitoring of the level1 products from Low Earth and geostationary missions. The responsibility encompass also the support to development and maintenance of critical Level 1 product processing functions mainly for GEO missions, but also for LEO INRC functions. DUTIES Manage the Image Navigation, Registration and Calibration Competence Area INRC CA, seeking continued development of the scientific knowledge required to support the exploitation, development, and evolution of level1 processing chains for EUMETSAT and Copernicus instruments Lead the implementation and operations of nearrealtime quality monitoring tools, the definition and scientific evaluation of related algorithms and the prototyping of INRCrelated processing software for the generation of level1 products for current MSG, EPS, Sentinel3 and future MTG, EPSSG, Sentinel456 missions Assess requirements and priorities for calibration, intercalibration, and validation of level1 products and support the definition and execution of calibration and validation plans Interact with the communities of users, collect and analyse their feedback on the relevance and quality of the generated products and their requirements for improved level1 products Lead the definition and maintain the science roadmap for improving the geometric and radiometric quality of level1 products, responding to user requirements, including assessment of their value to user communities Initiate and manage internal and external contributing studies Coordinate all operations support activities for level1 products derived from the GEO imaging missions. Participate in the operational coordination of all level 1 processing activities within EUMETSAT Support the Satellite Application Facilities involved in the exploitation of EUMETSAT Level 1 products, as required. What we offer Excellent salary, of up to Euro 8,500 month NET after tax and deductions based on skills and experience Flexible working time including additional flexileave Full medical coverage for employee and family Attractive final salary pension 30 days of annual leave 14.5 days public holidays Training and development support Relocation allowance and support if applicable SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Indepth knowledge of spaceborne remote sensing instrumentation Experience in image navigation, and calibration of spaceborne remote sensing instruments Extensive experience of realtime level1 processing and image qualitycalibration monitoring of data from relevant spaceborne remote sensing instruments, in particular from optical imagers Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate scientific teams, including management of performance and maintenance of key skills and knowledge Demonstrated leadership of development and implementation of operational remotesensing software Experience in working with satellite remote sensing user communities and researchers Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills including demonstrated experience in writing scientific and technical documents. QUALIFICATIONS An advanced university degree or equivalent in remote sensing, physics or another relevant discipline is required. LANGUAGE EUMETSAT is an international organisation with a working language of English. German language is not required to work here.
