Job description For our customer, ESO in Munich, Germany, we are seeking an experienced Database Content Management Engineer. Responsibilities Typical activities to be undertaken are Populate, optimize and maintain the database content in terms of quality, completeness and consistency Monitor and verify the transfer of metadata and of database content between the different ESO sites and the HQ in Garching Ensure that the content of the ESO Archive is consistent with the original metadata from other sites Perform required changesrepairs andor synchronizations using scripts and ad hoc SQL queries Daily maintenance of different operational databases including definition, testing and implementation of new setups improvement to the existing setups, like adding new users, creating new tables and indexes, changing permissions on database objects, among other tasks maintaining the documentation of each database up to date Responsible for publishing and releasing the data stored in ESOs Science Archive Facilities to the users Preparation of special data releases, for example instrument commissioning, science verification and demonstration runs, advanced data products and others Assist users in the area of SQL queries and database design Support the test and installation of new databases and tools interacting with the database content Procedure updating and documentation Support to DB migration efforts following HW or SW upgrades. This is a fulltime position with a planned starting date in November 2018. You will be based at ESOs facilities in Munich, Germany. Qualifications Competencies Applicants shall have a University degree in Computer Science, Physics, or equivalent. Additional, mandatory experience as follows Very high level of proficiency in SQL Experience with Relational Database High level of proficiency in Python Experience with Linux Good command of spoken and written English is essential. Additional desirable skills Column Store Databases Sybase IQ Experience with Python 3 Experience with Java Background in Astrophysics.
