Freeport McMoRan's stock is the worst performer among the materials and industrial sectors in the S&P 500, with a five-year average total return of minus 17%. This year has had frequent and large corporate deals, some of which are meant to "unlock shareholder value" by spinning off units into new companies, while others save companies billions of dollars in expenses by simply combining.
