The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere ESO is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the worlds most productive astronomical observatory. ESO operates three unique worldclass observing sites in the Atacama Desert region of Chile La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor. The ESO headquarters are located in Garching, near Munich, Germany.ESO is the focal point for Europes participation in the Atacama Large Millimeter Array ALMA consortium, which is currently constructing and operating a large submillimetre array in the Chilean Andes. The design and construction of the European Extremely Large Telescope EELT is also currently underway at ESO. For its Headquarters in Garching near Munich, Germany, ESO is advertising the position of Deputy Director of Engineering The Directorate of Engineering provides engineering services and resources to the ESO Programmes, including the Instrumentation Programme, ALMA and the EELT as well as to the Observatories. It is a matrixed organization with around 180 staff members representing all engineering disciplines required to design and build telescopes and scientific instruments. The Deputy Director of Engineering reports to the Director of Engineering and is part of the Directorate management team which comprises the Director, Deputy Director and Executive Officer. The Deputy Director will provide technical and engineering leadership to the Directorate of Engineering, comprising 180 members of personnel matters while the Director has the line management responsibility for all Department Heads and is in charge of the matrix related processes and the communication within and outside the Directorate. Both are assisted by the Executive Officer who is also an important interface to the other Directorates. The Deputy Director will assist the Director in developing an overall strategy for the Directorate. She will be part of the ESO management team and will as such contribute to the development of the overall policy and strategic planning across the Organization. Main Duties and Responsibilities The Director of Engineering will Provide technical and engineering leadership to the Directorate of Engineering, comprising approximately 180 members of personnel Assist the Director in developing and maintaining a overall strategy for the Directorate Provide technical coaching to the Department Heads of the Directorate and build bridges between the engineering disciplines and core competencies Manage the ESO Engineering Standards which are applicable to all ESO projects, including approving new standards and grating waivers to projects on the basis of recommendations provided by the Change Control Board Coordinate and organize emergency support to the Observatories and Projects. Mediate between DoE Departments and projects Observatories in case of technical disagreement Assisted by the DoE Executive Officer, ensure that the core competencies necessary to carry out the ESO Programme are identified and further developed and that the structure and processes required for that purpose are put in place. The tasks are not limited to the above and a flexible approach and ability to adapt to an evolving situation are required. Reports to The Director of Engineering Professional requirements University degreeMSc, PhD in one of the fundamental engineering disciplines or physics,substantial management and leadership experience within a scientific or engineering organisation, preferably international, is also required. Excellent writing and communication skills and a very good knowledge of English are essential. The initial contract is for a period of three years with the possibility of a fixedterm or indefinite extension based on technical and managerial achievements.
