To protect nearby neighborhoods, U.S. EPA is proposing updates to toxic air pollution standards for petroleum refineries. Specific elements include monitoring and public availability of air concentrations of benzene around fenceline perimeter of refineries; upgraded emission controls for storage tanks, including controls for smaller tanks; performance requirements for flares to ensure waste gases are properly destroyed; and emissions standards for delayed coking units.
