We are looking for an Earth Observation System Engineer E3 to join our Modis Aerospace team, working onsite at the European Space Agency in the Netherlands. Modis Aerospace is a specialized Engineering consultancy with more than 30 years experience providing aerospace Engineers to our key partners in The Netherlands. Modis is a longstanding business partner of the European Space Agency ESA, with more than 120 employees recruited from across Europe currently supporting ESAs activities. Specific tasks to be performed The scope of this position is the provision of system engineering support to the Future Missions and Instruments Division EOP8M for Mission and System Studies, which mainly consists of the following Support the definition and monitoring of activities for the preparation of future ESA Earth Observation EO missions, in particular for Copernicus Sentinels, new Earth ExplorerEarth Watch missions, Opportunity Missions, Fsats and Scout missions and operational meteorology missions Provide system engineering support to InCubed missions Review Technical Notes and actively participate to progress meetings and reviews related to EO future mission and system studies Support elaboration of SoWs, system requirements documents SRD and other applicable and reference documents for future mission and system studies Contributing to ensure the technical coherency of the system design of future EO missions, including, as needed, functional analysis and design, overall system concept, system level budgets, system performance analyses, definition of spacecraft andor payload subsystems and related data processing, and interfaces between payloadplatform and launcher and ground segment Perform internal studies for future EO missions, in particular to assess the results of external activities or to prepare the formulation of new mission concepts, including preliminary sizing of platformpayload, first estimation of the system engineering and performance budgets, with a focus on the space segment and its interfaces with the launcher and the ground segment Perform internal studies to evaluate the complementarity between ESA EO future missions and other missions existing or planned by other space organizations, including mission analysis and assessment of potential synergy or overlap of mission capabilities. Support work in the area of modelling of system or subsystem aspects for endtoend performance simulation and system engineering tools for future EO missions. To successfully perform the above mentioned tasks, the following background experience is required At least Master level or equivalent in a relevant technical or scientific discipline e.g. Space system engineering. Good general knowledge of ESA Earth Observation missions. Strong and demonstrated background in space system engineering and mission analysis, in particular for Earth Observation missions. Experience in space projects, preferably in the Earth Observation field andor in preparatory activities phase 0 and A. Experience with simulation tools Matlab or Python, MS Excel with VBA. Teamwork. Good communication and technical writing skills with capabilities to synthesize. Good organization skills. Methodical and proactive, with initiative and capability to work autonomously. Problemsolving and creativityoriented attitude. Proficiency in written and spoken English Experience in space system design, mission analysis and small platform sizing is an asset. Knowledge of Earth Observation remote sensing techniques is an asset. Experience with STK is an asset. About ESAESTEC The European Space Agency ESA has sites in several European countries. The European Space Research and Technology Centre ESTEC is the largest site and the technical heart of ESA. This nursery of European space activities is located in Noordwijk, Netherlands. At ESTEC, about 2500 engineers, technicians and scientists work handson with mission design, spacecraft and space technology. Almost all ESA projects except launchers are managed from ESTEC. In Noordwijk, people work on science missions, manned space missions, Earth observation, telecommunications and navigation satellites. ESTEC provides extensive testing facilities to verify the proper operation of spacecraft, such as the Large Space Simulator LSS, acoustic and electromagnetic testing bays, multiaxis vibration tables and the ESA Propulsion Laboratory EPL.
