Ericsson achieves 5 Gbps in live tests of pre-standard 5G

2014-07-02 09:00:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Ericsson said it has achieved speeds of 5 Gbps in live, over-the-air demonstrations of its pre-standard 5G network technology. The tests used the new 15 GHz frequency band and was witnessed by NTT Docomo and SK Telecom senior management at Ericsson's lab in Kista, Sweden. Ericsson noted that 5G implementation for commercial mobile networks was expected in 2020. The live demonstration employed an innovative new radio interface concept and advanced Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology. The company added that its 5G network includes new antenna technologies with wider bandwidths, higher frequencies and shorter transmission time intervals. Radio base stations built with baseband units and radio units are being developed specifically for 5G trials. Focus will also go to small cells in a heterogeneous network environment, new frequency bands (including 15 GHz) and high-speed, high-capacity backhaul transmission. Ericsson reiterated that 5G will enable new machine-to-machine applications such as traffic safety control, tactile internet, and industry sensors or capillary networks.
