Europe close: Stocks drop as investors digest earnings

European equities reversed a nine-day rally as investors focused on a mixed bag of earnings in the absence of euro-area economic data. Novartis declined after reporting lower second quarter earnings and cutting its sales forecast for its Alcon eye-care unit.
