(Telecompaper) FCC chairman Tom Wheeler wants to update and modernize the country's spectrum auction policies, opening more opportunities and creating greater flexibility for small businesses as the world moves to 4G and 5G. Wheeler said small businesses, including women and minority-owned businesses and rural service providers, should have the opportunity to share in future growth, but are stillhampered by significant barriers to meaningful participation in the industry. At the FCC's next Open Meeting, the Commission will vote on rules that will revamp the outdated spectrum auction bidding policies. At the same time, reforms will enhance the integrity of the FCC's auctions and ensure large corporations cannot "game" the system, Wheeler said, adding that bidding rules have not been updated since 2006 when most mobile subscribers still relied on 2G connections.
