Farmers' cane arrears mount to 600 crore

MUZAFFARPUR: A piquant situation has cropped up in sugar industry in the state where a sudden fall in wholesale sugar price from Rs 3,400 to Rs 2,500 per quintal has forced the sugar mill owners to hold up payment of sugarcane farmers on the ground that they are unable to sustain the loss of Rs 750 in production of every quintal of sugar. As a result, about Rs 600 crore belonging to farmers of the state has been held up by factories this season so far.
