February Fire Report: Fortifying the Front Lines Report is Coming

Another year is complete, and another set of data is ready to be added to my annual report. Unfortunately for the waste and recycling industry, we experienced 448 fires on our front lines in 2025. Based on a simple population assumption, we can extrapolate that the industry suffered 2,688 facility fires in the U.S. and Canada in 2025.

Compost 2026 continued its educational program with more studies that hammered home the benefits of organic waste diversion and what is working in California. Dr. Brendan Harrison, postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, took the stage to present a national-scale model showing that diverting organic materials from landfills could significantly reduce methane emissions while delivering agricultural benefits in the United States.
