For our activities in EUMETSAT, we are currently looking for a Ground Segment System Engineer. Main responsibilities You will carry out tasks which support activities related to three different phases in the life cycle of EUMETSAT systems. They will correspond to Phase B Architectural and Preliminary Design, various stages of the Detailed Design Phase C of a given programme under definition and development e.g. JasonCS, and Phase D Implementation and Validation, as support to Integration, Verification and Validation in the area of ground segment engineering and architecture. The ground segments of EUMETSAT programmes consist of TTC and Payload Data acquisition ground stations, mission management and control systems, data and product processing, monitoring and archiving, data dissemination facilities and the associated network fabric elements supporting data distribution and circulation. You will perform typical system engineering activities of the phase B, C and D in the lifecycle of a system, such as Requirements engineering encompassing functional and performance analysis for justification and validation of requisites, requirement allocation, apportionment and refinement of performances, and maintenance of the requirements baseline Design defining the conceptual build and configuration which results in a physical architecture, described by its complete functional, physical and software characteristics Technical analyses which are performed for the purpose of resolving requirements conflicts, decomposing and allocating requirements, assessing system effectiveness and justification of the proposed conceptual and physical designs with consideration to the suitability of COTS and reuse of operational components developed in the context of EUMETSAT ground segments Technical tradeoffs for assessing dependability, effectiveness, risks, efforts and planning Planning for integration and verification, which final objective is to demonstrate that the deliverables conform to the specified requirements. More in detail per phase, you should carry out as a minimum the tasks identified hereafter. In support of Phase B Support the refinement, management and maintenance of the GS system requirements in its Ground Segment Requirements Document, including analysis of the system level requirements, requirements tracing and justification Support the refinement and maintenance of the ground segment functional, operational and data model Support the definition of the Ground Segment architecture addressing the overall design of the ground segment system and its physical elements, including the GS deployment views, and generation of the associated architectural design documentation Perform analyses architectural tradeoffs, technical budgets, design to cost effort and risk analyses to ensure completeness and coherence of the design for all aspects related to system engineering, and contribute to the GS design justification and GS Technical Budgets documents Support to the decomposition of the GS System into procurement development elements, COTS and reusable components including allocation of requirements and functions from GS system level. Contribution to the element level requirements, especially requirements common to all elements and recommended technologies Support the definition of GS external interfaces, and internal interfaces between the different GS elements, and their documentation in ICDs Support the generation of IVV related concepts and documents, including preliminary integration and verification plans and verification control documents VCDs Support the preparation of the documentation for the GS Preliminary Design Review PDR and the review itself, as part of the ground segment project team, i.e., providing answers to and supporting the resolution of issues raised. In support of Phase C Support the completion of the detailed design of GS components, including analyses architectural tradeoffs, system technical budgets, risk analyses to ensure completeness and coherence of the design for all aspects related to system engineering Support the management and maintenance of the requirements baseline and definition of MME Services, on the basis of the capabilities needed by the Programmes GS Support the closure of actions raised at the GS PDR and other check points which might be identified in the detailed design phase Support the definition of requirements and interfaces for the components of the GS Support to studies internal or external and the evaluation of their results, and related engineering proposals for the ground segment detailed design Support to preparation of the ground segment system and constituent parts assembly, integration and verification detailed planning. In support of Phase D Analyse deliverables for conformance to existing requirements and specified test procedures Support the integration, verification, and validation IVV of the Ground Segment elements into the overall Ground Segment system Support following up all segment level development and testing activities and status, and participate in meetings and reviews as necessary. General Support to the preparation of, and participation in, project reviews and other check points at system, ground segment system and element level Support to the preparation and maintenance of schedule, resource allocations and work breakdown structures for the GS system engineering activities. Ideal candidate Requirements Essentials You should have a university degree or equivalent in the domain of engineering or science, together with at least 5 years of demonstrated experience in the following areas and disciplines Extensive experience in the specification, design including functional analysis and modelling, implementation, integration, and verification of large and complex Earth Observation ground segments Experience in the preparation of ground segment requirements and design documentation Experience in management and traceability of complex requirements structure, and preferably experience with DOORS Experience in the use of modelling and design tools in support of architectural design activities preferably CORE, or Enterprise Architect Detailed knowledge of at least 3 of the following and a good overview of the other systems and related technologies Near RealTime Data Processing chains, Ground segment endtoend monitoring system, Data Archive and Retrievals, Data Distribution, IVV. You should be able to fulfil the assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision, have a systematic approach to work, be able to plan your work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks. You should have the capability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation. Good communication skills verbal and written are important. You should be willing to work in a team of engineers and in cooperation with industry and partner agencies. Fluency in English is required. The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills. Desirables The following experience would represent additional assets Experience in Networking and Communications and Ground Stations subsystems Experience in system engineering formal practices and processes, especially in the field of space systems engineering, including knowledge of ECSS standards and system life cycle processes.
