Ever heard of a hackathon? Its not a fun word to hear in this era of computer hackers hitting everyone from the Pentagon to your next-door cubicle at the workplace. Its a strong enough word to inspire Hertz to host its own hackathon to explore the intersection of travel and automotive connected car technologies. There are a lot of hackathons taking place around the country now, where programmers, software developers, graphic designers, networkers, and project managers get together and create software innovations. Its big enough for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Facebook to host their own hackathons and support the cause. The Hertz Corp. and nestGSV (an ecobator ecosystem + incubator) put on Hertzs Mobility and Connected Car Hackathon in the heart of Silicon Valley Redwood City, Calif. on April 19 and 20. It brought together developers, entrepreneurs, corporate partners, and industry experts for dynamic collaboration. More than 400 developers had been signed up to gather, learn and create apps that will point to the future of the automotive and travel sectors. Participants joined teams to develop the next connected car apps until the buzzer sounded on Saturday afternoon for them to present their creations. Each team was given three minutes to pitch their creation to a panel of expert judges.
