DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 800 AM PDT (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Olaf was located near latitude 9.5 North, longitude 133.2 West. Olaf is moving toward the west near 12 mph (19 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue through today. A turn toward the west-northwest is expected by early Monday. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 80 mph (130 km/h) with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Olaf could become a major hurricane by late Monday or Monday night. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 15 miles (30 km) from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 989 mb (29.21 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- None.
