DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 800 AM PDT (1500 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Sergio was located near latitude 14.7 North, longitude 124.0 West. Sergio is moving toward the west-southwest near 7 mph (11 km/h). The hurricane is forecast to slow down and make a sharp northeastward turn by early next week. Maximum sustained winds are near 125 mph (205 km/h) with higher gusts. Sergio is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Little change in strength is expected today, and slow weakening possible by the end of the weekend. However, Sergio is forecast to remain a hurricane through the first half of next week. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 185 miles (295 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 950 mb (28.06 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- None.
