Space Applications Services performs and supports system and software engineering for the European Space Agency ESA, National Space Agencies and the aerospace industry. We are involved in international manned unmanned spacecraft programmes, earth observation, science, exploration, communications and related technology development. We require staff, wishing to join our team to work in a dynamic international environment for the following position IT Support Officer mf ENGSERVSYS201506 Tasks and Responsibilities The work will be performed at the European Space Research and Technology Centre ESTEC in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. TheIT Support Officer shall provide support to the IT environment of the Scientific Support Office at ESA and will be in charge of the following tasks System administration activities for all the computer systems used for scientific research activities. This includes several servers running, mainly the Ubuntu and Oracle Linux operating system as well as several user workstations. This will also involve the installation, upgrading and regular patching of the mentioned systems. Installation and support of commercial and public domain software web services, database services, directory services, backup services, print services, license services. Architectural design and improvement of the existing environment. Proper documentation on the support of the infrastructure. Maintenance support of the scientific publication lists for SREs missions. This will include development of tools in order to extract publication information from the internet, and combine this information to produce an ESA specific reporting tool. The IT Support Officer is expected to freely interact with any customer mainly ESA employees using the IT infrastructure as mentioned above. HeShe will also participate in specific IT related courses, workshops, users group presentations and internal IT administration meetings. Qualifications and Experience Applicants should have a university degree in computing, software engineering or equivalent, and at least 5 years of relevant professional experience. Candidates are required to have in depth knowledge and experience with a maximum of the following Ubuntu, Oracle Linux, OVM software, Solaris, RedHat and Mac OS. EMC backup solutions. Webserver and webserver related software. Unixbased application software. Database software MySQL, Oracle database. Network devices switches and load balancers. Modern programming and scripting languages Java, Perl, Python. Supporting and managing Network attached Storage devices. Supporting and managing a GRID system. Managing efficiently serverclient scenarios and improving them. Furthermore, candidates should have following skills Excellent organisational and communication skills. A proactive and enthusiastic attitude. The capacity to work as part of a team and in an international environment. A good command of written and spoken English is mandatory. Experience in interacting with the science community would be an advantage. The position will involve short European travels.
