Icann adopts transition plan away from US management

2016-03-11 09:33:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) has completed its proposal for the transition to a new governance system at its latest meeting in Marrakesh. The plan was handed over to the US government for approval, ahead of the expected end to US stewardship of the internet naming system in September. Under the new proposal, a new model has been developed for managing the technical functions of the IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority), which is currently handled by the US's National Telecommunication and Information Administration (NTIA). In addition to privatising the DNS system, it also proposes ways to enhance Icann's accountability as a fully independent organization answering to a wide range of stakeholders around the world. The proposal for a new model was first agreed in March 2014, and the final plan results from a year of consultations with the global internet community.
