SRONs mission is to bring about breakthroughs in international space research. Therefore the institute develops pioneering technology and advanced space instruments, and uses them to pursue fundamental astrophysical research, Earth science and exoplanetary research. As national expertise institute SRON gives counsel to the Dutch government and coordinates national contributions to international space missions. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. The expertise group Instrument Science has a vacancy for an Instrument scientist fm Vac. Nr. 1167 Project Within the climate and air quality program of SRON, you will work on the development, manufacturing and testing of immersed diffraction gratings for several space missions. These optical components are key technology enabling a next generation of spaceborne spectrometers in the short wave infrared wavelength range for the detection of greenhouse gases and pollutants. These instruments are being developed for the European Space Agency by consortia of European industries and research institutes. Tasks The candidate will perform the following tasks Act as system engineer in flight hardware delivery projects Act as assembly, integration and verification manager in flight hardware delivery projects Analyze optical performance test results Prepare documentation for reviews according to ECSS standard Manage supplier contacts. Profile The candidate shall meet most of the following requirements At least master of science level, a Ph.D. degree in applied Physics is preferred Experience in research and development Experience in microfabrication Experience in design or use of optical systems Experience with or interest in project management Experience with working in an industrial environment Gogetter, selfstarter, communicator. We also encourage excellent MSc candidates who do not have obtained a Ph.D to apply. Employment conditions Employment of this fulltime position at SRONUtrecht is by NWO The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research and will be for a period of 2 years with possible extension. The salary will be in accordance with the salary scales of NWO with a maximum of 5204, gross per month on a fulltime basis highly depending on education and experience.
