Intel, Luxottica sign wearable tech deal

2014-12-04 08:39:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Intel has signed an agreement with Italy's Luxottica group, maker of Ray-Ban and Oakley sunglasses, to combine premium, luxury and sports eyewear with smart technology. In a joint statement, the partners said the alliance will "push the boundaries of research and development to anticipate what smart technology for eyewear will look like in the future." No financial details were revealed about the R&D agreement, but the partners said the first product is expected to launch in 2015. Earlier this year, Luxottica signed an agreement to manufacture and distribute Google's internet-connected Glass product, while Intel last month unveiled a luxury smart bracelet developed with fashion cooperative Opening Ceremony. The Wall Street Journal also recently revealed that the new chips in the latest version of Google Glass will be manufactured by Intel. However, Intel and Luxottica said their products would be highly specific and "expand the limits of what eyewear can be."
