Intel, Rockchip to produce quad-core SoC for 3G tablets

(Telecompaper) Intel has entered into an agreement with Chinese fabless semiconductor company Rockchip to produce an Intel-branded, quad-core SoC platform for entry-level and value Android tablets. The platform will be based on an Intel Atom processor core integrated with Intel's 3G modem technology. Part of Intel's SoFIA range of integrated mobile SoC platforms, it is expected to be available in the first half of 2015. The SoFIA family now consists of three products: a dual-core 3G version due to ship in the fourth quarter, the quad-core 3G version produced with Rockchip and an LTE version version, also due in the first half of 2015. Pricing will be disclosed at a later date. Under the agreement between the companies, Intel and Rockchip will sell the new platform to OEMs and ODMs, primarily into each others' existing customer base.
