(Telecompaper) Jolla has announced a new update of its Sailfish mobile operating system and plans to make the software available for Android devices in order to expand distribution of the software. Sailfish 1.0 will be released in early March, supporting improved performance, extended landscape support, visual improvements, new camera functionalities, enhancements to the Jolla store and new general settings. The download for selected Android devices will be available during the first half of 2014. Prior to that, Jolla will release a launcher of the Sailfish user interface as an Android app. Jolla said the Sailfish OS has already been ported by developers to popular Android devices such as the Samsung Galaxy, Google Nexus and Sony Xperia, and a project is underway to support phones from Chinese maker Xiaomi. The first Jolla phones running Sailfish are available for sale on the company's website, for delivery throughout the EEA, as well as through Finnish operator DNA. Jolla said it's in talks with potential partners to expand sales to new markets, including Russia, India and Hong Kong where Jolla will open online sales in the near future and new retail outlets in European markets. The company will be demonstrating its phones and Sailfish 1.0 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
