(Telecompaper) KPN and Fon plan to roll out a network of Wi-Fi hotspots. The Wi-Fi routers of KPN subscribers will send out a second Wi-Fi signal, available for other KPN customers. KPN currently has a network of 1,500 managed hotspots, a number set to strongly increase. The network will be tested over the next six months and launched at the end of this year. Fon now has 7 million hotspots worldwide, concentrated in a number of countries including France, the UK, Japan and Belgium. Fon said it wants to have 50 million users within the next few years. According to Telecompaper, KPN's fixed services had a market share of 38.9 percent, followed by Ziggo (26.5%), which is working on its own network of home spots, also set to go live this year. UPC, in third position in terms of market share, has not yet disclosed any similar plans.
