A vacancy has arisen for a Lead Mechanical Engineer with Astrium in Portsmouth. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the mechanical design for Airborne and Naval Satcom terminal design and development. The terminals include the design and engineering of servo controlled gimballed satellite communication antenna assembly for military applications, along with below deck 19 rack mounted control equipment, and airborne ARINC electronic enclosures. The key responsibilities of the role are as follows To manage a small mechanical design team, to deliver On Time On Cost On Quality development programmes for both live Customer Projects and RD new terminals, working within a multidisciplined delivery team To champion lean approach to product development, and grow the talent and capability within the team Responsible as the overall Mechanical Design Authority for all TP products. Required to perform the full lifecycle of mechanical engineering developments concept through to production Conceptual design and detail design using 3D CAD Conducting stress FEA and thermal CFD analyses and assessments manual calculations To contribute to Mechanical Engineering Make Buy processes Preparation of statements of work for mechanical subcontracted work Working as part of a multidisciplinary team Designing for cost and manufacturability To support the products through life of the design Portsmouth based to work on Airborne and Naval systems and Satcom antenna design and mechanical analysis The successful candidate will demonstrate the following skills and experience Essential HNDDegree or equivalent in relevant engineering discipline Knowledge and experience of composite structures and design, with a good understanding of composite RF reflector properties Have knowledge and experience of a FEA Stress analysis package. Experienced in the use of 3D CAD Strong analytical skills Technical competence in Mechanical Engineering Experience in planning and coordinating Environmental Qualification programmes, from definition, compliance to military standards, and to implementation of test campaign Ability to work effectively with minimum supervision A methodical approach to work, with sufficient commitment and drive to complete tasks, even where adverse conditions are encountered Ability to work as an individual, within a team, and manage a small team Experience of working directly with customers and with the ability to present ideas and concepts to the customer with authority Organisational skills The ability to generate innovative solutions and to communicate them Willingness to travel overseas Desirable Have knowledge and experience of a thermal analysis package Have knowledge and experience in the use of Catia V5 Have knowledge and experience in design to Mil Std Able to work on own initiative within a busy Engineering department with the minimum of supervision. Experience in the use of FEMAP, CATIA V5 and Flowtherm is highly desirable Applications should be made via the EADS website.
