(Telecompaper) Liberty Global confirmed the launch of its next-generation Wi-Fi and telephony gateway across its European operations. The data modem and a Wi-Fi router will support broadband speeds up to 1 Gbps over its EuroDocsis 3.0 network. The new gateway is now available to Telenet customers in Belgium and UPC customers in Romania and will be introduced across the rest of Europe in the coming months. The cable operator said this is the first time it has designed a universal, locally-branded broadband product to be rolled out across its European and Latin American markets. The device was developed with the manufacturers Arris and Compal and is powered by software from Celeno, which supports the highest possible speeds over Wi-Fi to multiple devices. The box features a simplified LED display and an installation wizard to help customers set up and customise their home Wi-Fi service quickly and easily, according to the operator. Liberty Global said it's also focusing on extending the Wi-Fi service outside the home. It aims to grow its hotspot footprint from around 6 million public sites in Europe currently to over 10 million in 2016.
