Lightning strike fire temporarily shuts down Texas City refinery

A fire caused by a lightning strike temporarily shut down a Valero Energy Corp. refinery just south of Houston on Aug. 20. The lightning strike happened at the San Antonio-based company's refinery off South Loop 197 in Texas City just before 6:30 a.m. The lightning strike caused a fire that ignited the transformer's fuel source, which burned until 11:30 a.m. Aug. 20. No injuries were reported and Chief Zacherl said the fire was self-contained.
