Markets Live: ASX defies odds

Amid a spike in global volatility, the ASX200 closes higher to post its biggest weekly gain in two months, as investors snap up sold-down stocks, including the big banks. Indonesia's president-elect Joko Widodo plans to r aise the price of subsidised gasoline and diesel by around 50 per cent within two weeks of taking office, a move that will save the government nearly $US13 billion next year, an adviser to Widodo told Reuters.
