It employs some 40,000 employees generating revenues of approximately 14 billion per year. A vacancy for a Materials Laboratory Manager has arisen within Airbus Defence Space in Stevenage. You will control and manage the operation of the Materials Laboratory, in support of all Space Systems products at Stevenage, reporting to the UK Space Systems Materials Manager. Your main tasks and responsibilities will include Management of the Materials Laboratory resources work load assignment training facilities. Satisfy internal customers projects, product teams, manufacturing, and procurement through the activities performed in the field of material analysis and testing, on time and with respect to the process control and batch acceptance requirements. Provide materials testing expertise to projects, product teams and Customers. Regular reporting to management on performance of the Materials Laboratory. Represent the Materials Laboratory in meetings with other departments and external customers. Grow the external work portfolio of the Materials Laboratory. This role will involve some travel for business and as such you must be able to travel accordingly. We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience Degree in Materials Science and experience in the Space, Aerospace, Defence environment or highly regulated industry Proven Management and Supervisory experience a Management qualification would be an advantage Extensive experience working in a Chemical, Mechanical or Materials laboratory Good knowledge of materials and testing methods of materials polymers, composites and adhesives, or surface coatings, or metals or chemical analytical techniques A practitioner of and be able to interpret test data derived from one or more of the following methods of testing and assessing materials mechanical testing, thermal analysis, microscopy optical and SEM, XRF, FTIR, contamination analysis Appreciation of audits and continuous improvement Awareness of and ability to write and implement health safety, environment, COSHH processes and procedural documents Proficient in workplace organisational skills tools such as 5S, lean, problem solving Experience with external standards and auditing procedures would be desirable Ability to prioritise conflicting requirements Customer and results oriented Fluent in written and spoken English.
