Medical Projects Technology Unit Lead, Cologne, Germany. Wyle GmbH seeks a full time Medical Projects Technology Unit Lead to manage a multidisciplinary team at the European Astronaut Centre, Cologne, Germany, in support of CMSO activities. The position is expected to be filled by JuneJuly 2013. The Medical Projects Technology UnitLead represents one of the key functions of the Crew Medical Support Office, managing a team representing a diversity of health care specialties and operational expertise.The position serves to advance space medicine at the CMSO, to support the medical services onboard the International Space Station and to support future ESA human space programmes. This role enables the office to maintain key expertise in medical technologies, to evaluate new developments within the domains of space and terrestrial medicine and develop mechanisms and processes which identify and enable European technologies to augment the medical support structure on ISS, and meet the operational needs of European astronauts. These responsibilities include reviewing the space domain Life Science documentation, monitoring medical hardware and software technologies and projects for application to space medicine requirements and the provision of strategic advice and planning for the advancement of space medicine in Europe. This position requires skill in establishing and maintaining an excellent working relationship with ESAs Human Life Sciences Community and personnel management experience to manage and support a multidisciplinary team. This position is responsible for a variety of administrative assignments which require discretion and independent judgment and requires the incumbent to perform multiple high priority tasks simultaneously as directed by Head of the ESA Crew Medical Support Office. The position operates with great latitude for independent judgment and initiative. Essential duties and responsibilities include Supervise Medical Projects and Technology Unit personnel and projects Supervise the CMSO Medical Projects Strategy and project management processes. Supervise nonoperational exercise related activities performed by the CMSO Exercise Team. Supervise CMSO educational and outreach activities and develop and manage higher level space medicine education direction and strategy. Supervise IT activities and projects required for the routine operation of CMSO and its associated activities. Monitor spacebased clinical and technical developments in the medical domain Monitor terrestrial clinical and technical developments in the medical domain Monitor Life Sciences based research and evaluate its applicability to operational space medicine Monitor and maintain an understanding of ESA crew health related initiatives, programme proposals and strategic directives. Establish and maintain an excellent interface with ESAs Human Life Sciences Community Establish and maintain an excellent interface with the International Partner Human Life Science communities Serve as a liaison for intramural and extramural science investigators Required knowledge, experience and skills to succeed in the position include A minimum of 15 years experience in the field of life sciences andor space life sciences is necessary. A PhD or equivalent qualification is desirable. Experience in a professional team leadership role is desirable Fluency in English communication writing and speaking, including the ability to present confidently to large groups is a requirement. A strong foundation knowledge in human space flight, especially space operations is an asset. A general understanding of human physiology andor human space physiology is essential Experience and a detailed understanding of human physiology andor human space physiology is highly desirable. Experience in ISS medical systems, ISS medical operations, ISS space flight procedures, space flight communication protocols, andor ISS Astronaut training lesson designdevelopmentimplementation will be viewed as an asset.
