For the location in Darmstadt Germany we are looking for a Meteorological Product Software Engineer to work at EUMETSAT. Tasks This position is for a Meteorological Product Software Engineer consultancy support as part of the EUMETSAT Meteosat Second and Third Generation and Polar System Second Generation Programmes. The Key person shall support the Remote Sensing and Products Divisions RSP Atmospheric and Imagery Applications group AIA. Within the EUMETSATs Technical and Scientific Support Department TSS, RSPs role is to develop, implement, validate, and evolve operational observational products from EUMETSAT and agreed third party satellites. Additionally, RSP provides support to EUMETSATs future programmes. The work will be primarily in three areas 1. Support to the development and prototyping of algorithms for the upcoming Meteosat Third Generation MTG Flexible Combined Imager FCI. These algorithms have a strong heritage from those applied operationally at present to the Meteosat Second Generation MSG Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager SEVIRI. 2. Support to the development and prototyping of algorithms for the upcoming European Polar Satellite Second Generation EPSSG Visible and Infrared Imager VII. A number of algorithms to be supported have a common heritage with those from the FCI but several are entirely new developments. 3. Support to the routine operations of the MSG SEVIRI Meteorological Product Extraction Facility MPEF. This will involve troubleshooting, answering user questions and contributing to product upgrades and new system releases. The Key person shall support the design, prototyping, operational implementation and validation of the product algorithms. The work is carried out in a small project team consisting of relevant experts. The key person will also be involved in the analysis and resolution of anomalies relating to the product generation software. The tasks of the key person will typically include Maintenance and extension of a prototyping system. Implementation, possible optimisation and validation of new and updated algorithms. Acceptance and implementation of third party algorithm software into the prototyping system. Preparation of technical notes on implementation issues and user guides, installation notes for the prototyping system. Monitoring and operating the product generation facilities both for future ground segments or currently for the MSG MPEF. Visualisation and analysis of geophysical products. Essential requirements In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, such as computer science, physics, mathematics or remote sensing, the key person shall have minimum of 5 years of experience in operational product generation from satelliteremote sensing data. In addition, experience in validation of geophysical products from satellite data is highly desirable. Furthermore, the key person shall have practical, demonstrable experience with Algorithm software development using FORTRAN 9095 IntelGNULinux andor IBMPOWERAIX environments. Implementation of scientific algorithms from a given specification and their documentation. IDL programming language and object oriented aspects. Common meteorological data formats, i.e., BUFR, GRIB, HDF5, and netCDF. Coding and operation of optimal estimation methods for geophysical product retrieval from satellite data. Installing and running radiative transfer models for infrared and visible wavelengths. Authoring clear and concise technical documentation. Desirable requirements Practical, demonstrable experience of the following will be advantageous Experience using the community RTTOV model from the EUMETSAT NWPSAF. Anomaly correction processes.
