Minimum Wages in Apparel Manufacturing Countries: Bangladesh vs other origins (Statistical Report)

Bangladesh has officially announced a 51% rise of its minimum wage at apparel plants, effective from December 1st. This sudden surge in its labor costs should however be rapidly digested by domestic exporters, thanks to higher productivity levels. In addition, minimum wages had not been raised for five years in Bangladesh, whereas being significantly increased in rival countries. Currency variations are also limiting the impact of higher wages in local currency terms. Our report displays minimum wages in low-cost apparel manufacturing countries in Asia, from January 2015 to last quarter 2018, in local currency and US$ terms. A 3-year comparison is available in local currency terms, fixed US$ terms, and current US$ terms.
