NASA has unveiled the science goals for Curiosity's successor, the 2020 Mars rover. Whereas Curiosity is capable of analyzing Mars' past habitability, the 2020 Mars rover will look for actual signs of life with an on-board microscope that can pick out fossils and other telltale indicators (biosignatures) that microbial life once existed on Mars.
