Energy Department's Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF), located on NREL's campus and imagined by NREL leaders who foresaw possibilities for high performance computing (HPC), handles large and complex datasets that exceed traditional database processes. As part of energy-efficient HPC data center, ESIF's Peregrine supercomputer, dedicated by Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz in September 2013, can perform more than one quadrillion calculations per second.
