Netflix in talks to enter China with Wasu - report

2015-05-15 09:07:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Netflix is in talks with a Chinese media company and other possible partners on its entry into the Chinese market, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. Netflix has held discussions with companies including Wasu Media Holding, backed by Alibaba founder Jack Ma, about forming a partnership. Wasu has been working with Alibaba Group to produce set-top boxes since 2013. Wasu operates cable TV and broadband networks in Hangzhou, where Alibaba is based. Wasu said in April last year it would sell a 20 percent stake to Alibaba Chairman Ma and fellow billionaire Shi Yuzhu. Netflix wants a local partner that has licences for content on all devices, including mobile phones, computers and set-top boxes. China's State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television has given internet TV licences to seven companies, including Wasu. Chief Content Office Ted Sarandos told an investor conference 13 May that Netflix intends to "try to figure out China and how to get there." The company doesn't intend to go to China without a partner, he said.
