Oracle loses Java infringement suit against Google

2016-05-27 08:38:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Oracle has lost its lawsuit against Google seeking a share of the profits from Android due to Google's use of Java code. Jurors in San Francisco federal court rejected Oracle's argument that Google needed a license to use its Java programming language to develop Android and concluded Google made fair use of the code under copyright law, Bloomberg reports. Oracle sought damages of USD 8.8 billion, claiming Google has made USD 21 billion in profit from the over 3 billion Android devices activated. The company also wanted USD 475 million in what it claims was lost licensing revenue. Oracle said it plans to seek review of the verdict by the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington. The same court ruled in its favor in 2014, saying the Java APIs are eligible for copyright protection.
